Hello, I was passing by and saw your blog. Loved the Nutella cupcakes photo, btw I tried making them twice in fact and both times they didn’t rise as nicely as yours did. I put about half a teaspoon of Nutella on the top and swirled it but find that the Nutella tends to stay in one spot so it prevents the cake from rising. Yours is nicely spread out – do tell how you did it. You can email me if it’s not too much problem.

    Thanks for sharing!

hey i’m so itching to bake cupcakes after looking at your site… but i’m just starting out… would really love to know where to get cupcake pans or those to sit cupcakes in when they bake… it’s real hard to find in singapore 😦 thanks! oh and tips on where to find the most value for money suppliess~

  7. ovenhaven Post author

Hi tiger, thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚ I get my supplies from Phoon Huat; they offer quite a wide variety of baking tools and ingredients at affordable prices. As for the cupcake pans, you can get those at Phoon Huat as well. You can find the location of Phoon Huat stores here; I personally recommend the Toa Payoh and Holland V outlets. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a mail.

  8. tiger

No problem, tiger. The last I’ve been to tpy’s ph was early last year, so things may have changed by now πŸ˜› I used to frequent jurong east ph, and it’s been my favourite the longest time, until it closed down last month 😦 Hope you’ll find your favourite outlet!

I think you’re incredibly talented and your eye for details complements your passion for photography. Love your writing, food and pictures – keep up the good work girlfriend.
Here’s something totally uncanny: 1.My hubby’s a photographer 2.I also used to go to the same JE phoon huat(was totally bummed when they closed – even Shop&Save is gone!) and now I go to the one at HV. 3. we have a website doing home-based biz with my hubby selling brownies (though your biz is wayy cooler) AND we’re staying in the west-side too.*goosebumps

  13. ovenhaven Post author

Hi there, thanks for all your kind words πŸ™‚ And wow, that sure is a lot of similarities, huh? Right now I oscillate between Holland V’s PH, Clementi’s and Toa Payoh’s. The first if I’m intending to buy a lot, the second for convenience, and the third if I’m not too lazy to go to Holland V’s (since TP offers the same wide range, but cheaper). I truly miss the JE outlet! 😦

Anyhow, thanks for dropping by, and hope you’ll come by often!

  25. Helen

    Hi Ovenhaven,
    You are very talented.
I have the same problem with the Nutella cupcakes (except mine are muffins), ie the Nutella is too thick and dry to be swirled around as frosting on the top of the muffins. Could you please mail me how you manage to do yours so nicely? Also, how do I do the same swirling frosting for peanut butter?

My email address is included above. Thanks very much for your help.

  26. meditatingmummy

  32. j

Hello! I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time already and I’ve finally decided to get myself an oven to try out your recipes! May I know how do I go about choosing a good oven? What’s the oven you are using? πŸ™‚

    1. ovenhaven Post author

Congrats on getting an oven! I’m using a really old yet trusty big oven (around 10 years or so?) whose brand is Sanyo. Don’t think it’s the market anymore though πŸ˜› When choosing an oven, identify the functions you need. Some include two racks (upper & lower), some like mine have the grill and microwave functions as well, and some have fan.

I looked around, and one of the popular brands as recommended by a local baker/chef is Tecno TEC3400. Can’t vouch for it though, since I’ve never used it, but apparently she uses them for her classes, and recommends it to her students as well. Have fun shopping! πŸ™‚

  33. kris

    nice to know u ^^

  35. Azlin

Salam, passed by from TasteSpotting. I simply love your fondant cake designs… So the original. How I envy your talent. However, when I hopped by your Recipe Index page, I noticed, under the Cakes category, Oreo Butter Cake & Pomegranate Yogurt page are poiting to the same link. Is that suppose to be?

Anyway, thanks for the lovely recipe & wonderful tips. I’ll definetely WILL try some of them. Continue with the GREAT work. And good luck in everything.

  36. Honestly Good Food

Glad to have found your blog on flickr. I really dig your photography style. I’m jealous, actually. I’d love to know what you thought about my blog. It’s new, and I’m always looking for tips to make it better. Ever want to guest post? That would be awesome, too.

  37. shana allias

Hi, Great job with all the recipes and I must say, I really admire your food photography skill, mind sharing the camera & lens you’re using.
Somewhat I get off-topic from the other readers who’s more concern with recipes, don’t get me wrong, I do love your recipes. And I love to cook but I have always failed at baking πŸ˜›

I Will keep on reading your blog and will try to bake some of those recipes. Thanks!

    1. ovenhaven Post author

Thanks for dropping by, Shana πŸ™‚ I’m currently using Nikon D40 with just the kit lens18-55mm. You should definitely give some of the recipes here a try; who knows it would change your mind about baking! I’m a horrid cook, so I always just take the easy way out and try to cook using the oven ~hehe πŸ˜›

  38. Nadzyyy

Came across your nutella brownie recipe last night when trying to figure out what to do with the boatload of nutella my husband bought on impulse at Costco. My 11 year old son and I whipped them up in a flash for a family dinner. Huge hit and fun to make, thank you!

  40. Husna

Salam alykum Sis πŸ™‚ Amazing talent you’ve got there! Any chance opening a private baking course? Hehee… Btw, have you ever baked a Red Velvet Cake ?

    1. ovenhaven Post author

Wa’alaikumsalaam Husna πŸ™‚ Perhaps sometime in the future, when I’m confident enough, I’ll hold baking classes. For now I’m still very much an amateur πŸ˜›

As for Red Velvet, I know they’re all the craze now in SG, but I’ve never tasted nor baked one before! I don’t eat cream cheese, so Red Velvet’s out for me πŸ˜›

  41. Nur

Hi, a few years back my friend ordered Chanel cupcakes from you. May I know, can we still order such cupcakes? If ya how much isit? Thanks πŸ™‚

  42. Nur

Hi, Oic the cupcake was nice πŸ™‚ Okies thanks for the reply thou πŸ™‚ do you know of any bakery that bake such cupcakes? πŸ™‚

  43. liyanah

hey! i just happened to stumble along your blog, and i must say, its really impressive! i am a beginner to baking, and looking at your photos and how simple the recipe seems like, i am really very excited to start now (my god, 3am?!, HAHAHA) Anw, may I ask, i recently bought a simple oven toaster, cornell. And tried to whip up some cheesecake and bread pudding but it does not turn out like what i want it to be. When i use my cousin’s oven, it seems to work well. May I ask, is there any differences in oven? How can i ‘get use’, set the right temp, right time using this oven? Do you have any idea? THANKS ALOT!!!

    1. ovenhaven Post author

Hi Liyanah, thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚ Yup, every oven has its own temperament, so you’ll need to adapt to it. For instance, if your bakes always seem underbaked, or worse, get burnt over the stipulated time, you’ll need to calibrate your oven temperature. You can purchase an oven thermometer to check if the internal temperature matches the one on the dial. If inside reads 170c when you want 180c, then next time you’ll know to calibrate by 10c each time you bake.

Also, if one side of your bake gets cooked or burnt faster than the rest, it means your oven has hot spots. So be sure to avoid placing your tray near that edge. Plus, if you find that your bakes usually get burnt or browns too fast, try using a lighter coloured pan/tray, as darker ones conduct heat faster.

I really hope that helps, sweetie. Now go get yourself acquainted with your oven! πŸ™‚

  44. Narita Nashella

Hi was just wondering what oven are you personally using and what would you recommend for ovens for avid bakers like yourself? πŸ™‚

    1. ovenhaven Post author

Hi there, I’m currently using an out-of-production Sanyo oven that has lasted me 10yrs+ already. Whilst it’s treated me well, you can’t find it anymore! And concomitantly, I’m not exactly the best to recommend ovens since I’ve only ever had one. πŸ˜›

However, from what I’ve read, for avid bakers, most recommend Bosch / Brandt (for mid prices). I think what’s most important when purchasing your oven is to list down the features you want:
      (1) Will you be using it for other reasons besides baking, eg roasting, grilling
      — if you’re gonna do a lot of roasting / grilling, you shd get an oven with a good self-cleaning system eg pyrolytic / catalytic
      (2) the capacity of the oven; esp width
      (3) accuracy of the temperature dial; mine gives round digits, but some wld prefer those that give accurate, eg 175, 185
      (4) heating elements; preferably top AND bottom
      (5) the door; always go for a double / triple layered door for safety

Oh, and if you’re torn between two of very similar features, just go for the one with the longer warranty. Hope that helps!

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your baking recipes and helpful techniques. I’m looking forward for more of your baking adventures this year. Happy baking!
